MPI Europe, Brussels-Based: Program/Research Assistant

The Migration Policy Institute Europe (MPI Europe) is a nonprofit, independent research institute that aims to provide a better understanding of migration in Europe and thus promote effective policymaking. MPI Europe provides authoritative research and practical policy design to governmental and nongovernmental stakeholders who seek more effective management of immigration, immigrant integration, and asylum systems as well as successful outcomes for newcomers, families of immigrant background, and receiving communities in Europe.

Description

MPI Europe seeks a highly motivated Program/Research Assistant to join its dynamic Brussels team. Primary tasks include managing the Institute’s events and meetings from start to finish, assisting in policy-relevant writing and editing, and producing high-quality research to support the MPI Europe team. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional organizational, writing, editing, and analytical skills and a thorough understanding of EU and European policy frameworks for immigration and asylum. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications

Required

  • Master’s degree with 2 years work experience (relevant internships will be taken into account). We will consider candidates holding a bachelor’s degree, who can demonstrate significant work experience.
  • Excellent English writing and editing skills (finalists will be asked to complete an in-person writing and/or editing exercise).
  • Strong organization skills with attention to detail.
  • High motivation and initiative; ability to handle multiple assignments, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work both independently as well as a part of a team.
  • Proven research and analytical skills.
  • Substantial knowledge of EU and European governments and institutions, legislation, and socioeconomic context.
  • Academic and/or professional background in migration policy.

Preferred

  • Additional foreign language capability, French strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of EU and European asylum policy framework and processes.
  • Ability to effectively collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data through both primary and secondary sources.
  • Strong knowledge and application of data and statistical analysis (with high proficiency in Excel), and related software packages.

Duties and Responsibilities

Project Coordination

  • Primary responsibility, under supervision, for coordinating public events and private roundtables for MPI Europe, and MPI’s International Program, including helping to conceptualize projects, developing event agendas, managing correspondence with participants, and coordinating with external contributors and partners.
  • Routinely draft official correspondence and develop project materials, as appropriate.
  • Prepare and/or edit commissioned papers, including background papers, memoranda, reports, articles, etc., with guidance of senior staff.
  • Actively monitor current migration debates and developments.
  • Maintain and update MPI Europe contacts and mailing lists, calendar activities, and programmatic documents.

Research

  • Contribute to drafting and editing both explanatory and analytical reports, policy briefs, and other research materials, both independently and with supervision.
  • Carry out literature reviews, gathering both quantitative and qualitative data, to contribute to analytical research products, ensuring timeliness and accuracy in reporting.
  • Contribute to and/or co-author MPI Europe articles and publications; may include single- and/or lead-author policy briefs or similar publications with appropriate experience and guidance.

Other

  • Assist senior staff in fundraising duties, including writing sections of grant proposals and reports, conducting research on prospective funding opportunities.
  • Offering support to the MPI Europe team with project management and other tasks where necessary.
  • Represent MPI Europe in interactions with members of the European policy community.

Terms

The position will be for a one-year period, to begin in October 2014, and will be remunerated competitively, according to experience. Applicants must have permission to work in Belgium.

Senior Policy Analyst

The Migration Policy Institute (MPI), a nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank dedicated to the study of national and international migration policies, is seeking an exceptional Senior Policy Analyst to lead the International Program’s research on economic and labor market issues. The successful candidate will have strong analytical skills and a sound understanding of labor economics, the role of public policy in shaping labor market institutions, immigration, and immigration systems. Salary and title will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Duties

  • Design and manage policy research projects and ensure rigor and quality in all research products for MPI’s International Program.
  • Work with MPI colleagues and external collaborators to conduct original, innovative research and write reports, policy briefs, and articles on immigration policies in North America, Europe, and Asia.
  • Represent MPI and promote its research in the media and public and private settings.
  • Work with senior staff to identify funding opportunities, develop appropriate research methodologies for new projects, and produce funding proposals.
  • Supervise other MPI analysts on specific research projects.

Required

  • PhD in public policy, labor economics, or a closely related field. Candidates with Master’s degrees and at least five years of highly relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Excellent understanding of labor economics, including the role and impact of regulations, supply and demand for labor, determinants of pay and productivity, the impacts of immigration on the labor market, and human capital development for immigrants and disadvantaged groups in high-income countries other than the United States.
  • Sound knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies required for designing and implementing public policy research projects.
  • Ability to break down, analyze, and clearly communicate policy questions for a nontechnical audience, and ability to visualize, present, and explain data effectively.
  • Proven writing and editing skills.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with the immigration policies of major immigrant-receiving countries other than the United States, including knowledge of current immigration trends, debates, and policies; work-permit and visa policies in immigrant-destination countries; and the economic and labor market dimensions of immigrant integration policy.
  • Experience conducting original analysis using statistical programming software (particularly household survey data and administrative datasets).
  • Substantial publications record, especially in relevant policy fields, and standing in the research and public policy worlds.
  • Experience with public speaking and working with the media.

Editor/Publications Manager

The Migration Policy Institute (MPI), a nonpartisan, nonprofit think tank dedicated to the study of national and international migration policies, seeks an exceptional, detail-oriented, deadline-sensitive individual to edit the Institute’s reports and books, and manage the publications process from editing through production. The successful candidate will have a proven track record in content, organizational, and copy editing of substantive research and public policy publications, as well as fact-checking, and the ability to manage the publications process through layout on to production. The Editor/Publications Manager will be responsible for content, organizational, and copy editing, as well as fact-checking the majority of MPI publications, working with MPI program and communications staff and commissioned authors, as well as external editors as necessary. Salary and benefits commensurate with experience.

Qualifications:          

Required

An exceptional candidate with professional experience in content, organizational, and copy editing in a public policy or think tank/research organization setting who has a bachelor’s or advanced degree in English, journalism, communications, public policy, or comparable discipline. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong aptitude to bring improvements to organization, flow, and clarity of manuscripts and will have:

  • 5-7 years hands-on editing experience in think tank, journalism, policy, or similar environment
  • Proven excellent English editing, writing, and rewriting skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple assignments, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel in particular)
  • Ability to interact with coworkers, external researchers, and others in a professional, collegial manner
  • Command of the Chicago Manual of Style

Preferred

  • Master’s in English, journalism, communications, public policy, or related discipline
  • International migration knowledge highly valued, as is broad familiarity with related global issues, including development, labor market and (informed reader) economic policies, labor mobility, international organizations, etc.
  • Experience working with authors who are non-native English speakers

Duties and Responsibilities

The Editor/Publications Manager will report to the Director of Communications, assuming responsibility for the content, organizational, and copy editing and fact-checking of research publications (reports, policy briefs, fact sheets, and books) written by MPI researchers as well as external authors.
