US Census Data on the Foreign Born Home > 2000 Census Data

Please note that the data in this archived tool are not comparable to the data in the 2005 American Community Survey (ACS) version. The data are not comparable because the new tool excludes persons living in group quarters such as dormitories, prisons, or long-term care facilities. The US Census Bureau’s 2005 ACS did not include this population, so the 1990 and 2000 census data in the 2005 tool were modified to match by removing the group quarters population.
We are in the process of updating our ACS tool with the 2006 data, which is comparable to the data based on 2000 Census. Click here to see the 2005-2006 version of the data tool.

US Census 2000 Data on the Foreign Born

While the foreign-born population of the United States increased by 11.3 million between 1990 and 2000, the impact of this growth varied considerably from state to state in terms of population size and composition. Many states experienced enormous growth in their foreign-born population, while others remained more or less unchanged. To facilitate analysis of these differences, the interactive map below provides state-by-state data on foreign-born populations from both the 1990 and 2000 censuses. Click the desired state to generate information on the size, composition, and socio-economic characteristics of the foreign-born population.
