According to the World Bank, remittances to developing countries sent via official channels represented about US$314 billion in 2009. Remittances play a major role in many countries - for example in Mexico, where about 1 in 10 of its natives live in the United States. What are the human capital, social, and economic implications of emigration on sending countries and communities? Use our tools, maps, and resources to find out the answers to questions such as: What is the share of remittances in Moldova’s gross domestic product? Which cities worldwide have the largest immigrant population? Which Mexican states send the largest number of migrants to the United States? How do developing-country governments establish and strengthen ties with their diasporas? Visit MPI’s Migrants, Migration, and Development Program, and the Migration Information Source for the most up-to-date research and policy papers on migration and development.
