UNRWA Deputy Commissioner-General Karen AbuZayd
The Palestinian refugee population is one of the world's oldest and largest. At the center of relief efforts is the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), which serves more than 3.9 million Palestinian refugees. Afghanistan is facing one of the biggest population returns ever. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is projecting the return of nearly two million people, with 1.2 million returning from Pakistan and another 400,000 from Iran. In addition, the UNHCR will assist roughly 400,000 IDPs (internally displaced persons). As of the end of June 2002, approximately 1.1 million Afghans had returned home. (Source: UNHCR)
